What Type of Greenhouse Glass Should You Choose?

Choosing the right glass for greenhouse replacement depends on how you use your greenhouse and what level of durability or safety you require. The most common types of replacement glass include:

• Standard horticultural glass – Affordable, clear float glass around 3 mm thick. It’s used in most traditional greenhouses and offers excellent light transmission. However, it is more fragile than safety glass and can break into sharp shards.
• Toughened (tempered) safety glass – Heat-treated to be stronger and much safer. If broken, it shatters into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards. This is ideal for family gardens, schools, or areas prone to impact (like from footballs, pets, etc.).

Most modern greenhouses are moving toward toughened safety glass due to both improved safety and better wind resistance. It also lies flatter and is less prone to warping under thermal stress.

If you’re replacing several panes at once, it might be a good opportunity to upgrade to safety glass, especially if you’re already disassembling part of the structure. Keep in mind that safety glass is usually thicker (around 4 mm), so make sure your clips and glazing channels are compatible.
